“And when you pray…” Matthew 6:7

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, He offered up the model prayer which we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” Jesus was giving the Sermon on the Mount and just before the model prayer He laid out the following conditions for when you pray:

  • Don’t pray like the hypocrites (showing off to be seen or heard)
  • Pray in secret – uncluttered by things around you (pressures, electronics…)
  • Don’t use vain repetitions (pray personally, intimately to Him)

Instead, He said to pray like this:

  • Address your Father in heaven – Our Father (inclusive – “our” Father)
  • Acknowledge His holiness – Hallowed be Your name (the highest Name)
  • Invoke His will in heaven into earth – Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven (ask for His foreordained plan to be actualized in our/your realm on earth)
  • Ask for provision – Give us daily bread (He cares for our daily needs)
  • Ask for forgiveness; give forgiveness – Forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors (begin with a clean slate & offer a clean slate)
  • Ask for His pathways away from temptations and for protection from evil – Don’t lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one (He’s your guide and your guard)
  • Engage in worship – Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen (Close by honoring that He is the King worthy of power & glory)

It’s a simple pattern, yet it is supernaturally profound. PRAYER CHANGES THINGS. In John 14:14, Jesus said, “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” That’s a bold statement! In like manner, Jack Hayford states that God’s will on earth depends on an interceding Church. Wow!

Dwell Church, it’s time to pray! Our nation, our lives, our heritage, and even our lineage depend on it. There is hope because things happen when we pray! Darkness is rising all around us in the earth as we’ve seen with political unrest, terrorist attacks, and pandemics- these are all indicators that it’s time to pray!

Prayer: Lord, teach us to pray, knowing that You said nothing is impossible!
